Fingertip tech to tackle truancy

Mr Thomas added, "It could lead to a cashless system for catering in schools. It is all about using technology to our advantage."

Paul Coase, of VeriCool, said that once the student had registered by pressing their finger on a scanner and the process was complete the information could be sent to the attendance officer within minutes.

He said, "The attendance officer will look at a the list and they can contact parents or guardians via text message within seconds.

"I was at another school which uses the system and in under 10 seconds from being contacted, parents were on the phone explaining that their child was off sick or that they thought they were in school."

Anyone who fails to register can be recorded with an unauthorised absent mark by the teacher and the entire registration process can take less than three minutes.

Blech!
